Catherine Ezell

As a realist/impressionist, I paint and draw directly from life whenever I can. When working from a life model, I paint portraits with a fresh, loose, painterly style in two or three sittings. I look for the emotions of the sitter, what Italian masters called “moti mentali” or motions of the mind. Applying this same technique when painting an outdoor scene or a still life, I strive to capture the atmosphere, mood, feeling and focus of the subject more than rendering every fine detail. Light and shadow play an important role for me in achieving the illusion of volume and dimension.

When unable to work from life, I paint from photos in my studio, striving for the same effect I look for when painting from life.
