Joan Green
Dancer:
I am a modern dancer, choreographer and teacher, co-founder and co-director of Back Porch Dance Company, an interracial and intergenerational company of women that performed throughout New England from 1985 through 2001. This fall (2008) I was a guest choreographer for the Cambridge Rindge and Latin Dance Company; I also performed in a dance by Danny McCusker and with the Prometheus Elders Ensemble, of which I am a member.
Since 1992, I have taught a workshop series in improvisation and composition called "Dancing Outside the Lines". The next series begins the first week in March, 2009; email me for further information.
Visual artist:
For the past decade I have been working in watercolor and doing a lot of my painting on the South Coast of Jamaica.
This fall (2008) I began to paint in oils again, after a hiatus of 39 years. This is a thrilling homecoming. People always figure prominently in my work – the human figure, moving, working or at rest, alone or in groups, is a source of endless fascination to me.
For many years I have been creating "birth pictures" to celebrate the birth of babies of friends and family.
A group of these can be seen on my website, www.greenbrownart.com.
