Joan Green
Dancer:
I am a modern dancer, choreographer and teacher, co-founder and co-director of Back Porch Dance Company, an interracial and intergenerational company of women that performed throughout New England from 1985 through 2001. I have performed recently with poet Molly Watt, in a dance by Daniel McCusker and with the Prometheus Elders Ensemble. Since 1992, I have taught a workshop series in improvisation and composition called "Dancing Outside the Lines". The next series begins the first week in March, 2010; email me for further information. I am also teaching a choreography class for home-learners 9 thru 14. I have recently taught a workshop for adults called “Reclaiming Your Right to Dance” and dance workshops for groups of at-risk teenaged girls.
Visual artist:
For the past decades I have been working in watercolor and doing a lot of my painting on the South Coast of Jamaica. In fall 2008 I began to paint in oils again, after a hiatus of 39 years. This is a thrilling homecoming.
People always figure prominently in my work – the human figure, moving, dancing, working or at rest, alone or in groups, is a source of endless fascination to me. This fall I created a series of portraits done from quick drawings of the students to whom I teach art at Codman Academy Charter Public School, Dorchester, MA.
For many years I have been creating "birth pictures" to celebrate the birth of babies of friends and family. “For Chantal”, seen here, is the latest of these (more on my website at www.greenbrownart.com.) I have had four watercolor/collage works commissioned for Childrens Hospital Boston. I invite commissions for child-oriented artwork.
