Joan Green
Dancer:
I am a modern dancer, choreographer and teacher, currently the Artistic Director of Back Pocket Dancers, an intergenerational company that creates programs of dances especially for elder venues. Our new program, Dances from Far and Near, presents stories narrated and danced and will premiere at several elder venues in Spring 2011. Also this Spring I will be collaborating with poet and NoCA member Molly Watt on Consider This, a work combining dance, music and spoken word, to be presented in Across the Ages Dance Concert, June 17 & 18, at Green Street Studios, Cambridge. In Fall 2010, I was one of five choreographers commissioned to create site-specific pieces for the Middlesex Fells, which were performed in October. I continue to teach a course in improvisation called Dancing Outside the Lines that begins again in March.
Visual artist:
People are most often the subject of my work; I am fascinated by bodies and the souls that inhabit them. I am not interested simply in representing them but also lending insight into their lives through the composition, rhythm, gesture and color of the work. I work in many media - watercolor, India ink, collage, oils - and focus on how figures relate to each other and charge up space with the energy of their movement. I seek ways to convey the energy of the original gesture and marks that I make in drawing into the painting or collage. As a modern dancer and choreographer, dance movement resides in my muscle memory and falls from my brush with a certain ease and satisfaction.
For the past decades I have been working in watercolor and doing a lot of my painting on the South Coast of Jamaica. In fall 2008 I began to paint in oils again, after a hiatus of 39 years. This is a thrilling homecoming.
