Susan MatthewI am a tapestry artist. My work is contemporary, colorful, and bold. I weave my tapestries by hand on a 48" floor loom. My tapestries are made of wool, and I use hand dyed colors in each piece. My images are abstractions of my views of the natural world or my inner world. I design each piece with a particular theme in mind, and craft the design until I feel it is ready to commit to the loom. A tapestry can take hundreds of hours to weave, so I have to be sure that the design is just right.I love to weave - carrying weft threads across rows of linen warp, packing in the threads to create the right consistency, and drinking in the vibrant colors. Tapestry weaving is both a tactile and visual experience, for both the viewer and the artist. I delight in the feel of the yarn through my fingers as I work - sometimes it feels as if the yarns are singing. Tapestry is often used as a metaphor, but for me, it is a real life metaphor. Tapestry can teach you about life, if you'll let it. |
