Events - David Bass/Big Family Opera Weekend

POWERS OF TEN is a 90-minute (plus intermission) multimedia science oratorio for audiences of all ages by David Haines, composer of this year's family opera The Puzzle Jigs and last year's science oratorio Lifetime.  It explores the sizes of things in the universe, from quarks to galaxy clusters, through 21 brilliant, lyrical, accessible songs.  It will be sung by a chorus of more than 100 children and adults.

Our first performance received a standing ovation from a capacity crowd of 300 at the Museum of Science Cahners Theater last Sunday!

There will be two more FREE performances as part of the Second Annual Cambridge Science Festival:

Saturday May 3, 1:00 PM at the Tobin School
197 Vassal Lane, Cambridge

Sunday May 4, 3:00 PM at the MIT Stata Center  Kirsch Auditorium (32-123)

32 Vassar Street, Cambridge

Note: the performance times published in the Cambridge Science Festival brocure are INCORRECT.

This is our ONLY fundraising event of the year, so please come out to support your local family opera!

A Meet-the-Composer Reception will be held at 6:00 PM prior to the concert.  This will be a wonderful opportunity to chat with David Haines. The reception includes a light buffet of Mediterranean food and wine and will take place two blocks from the Masonic Hall at 48 Porter Road.
Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance.

The concert features two song cycles by David Haines based on the poetry of William Blake and Charles Causley and is intended for adults and teens.

David's setting of Blake's "Songs of Experience" will be performed by soprano Stephanie Green,
accompanied on piano by the composer.  Both are visiting from Devon, England.

The one-hour concert will conclude with the American premiere of "Seven Songs to Poems by Charles Causley", a 20th century poet from Cornwall.  These will be sung by members of the Family Opera and the Teignmouth Community Choir, who are also visiting from England (and who also sing in Powers of Ten).

Desserts and tea will be served following the program, with an opportunity to meet our Devon visitors.
Tickets are $30 and may be purchased in advance or at the door.
