My jazz ensemble is giving a recital on Wednesday night January 20th at 7:00 PM at the Winchester Community Music School,
not far off Routes 16 and 38.
The ensemble consists of me on piano, Steve Toborg on trombone, Bill Lippman on keyboard bass and other voices (primarily Hammond B-3) when soloing, and our coach, noted jazz pianist Harvey Diamond, on drums.
We're playing Horace Silver's "Song for My Father" and "Strolling," Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite," John Bright's "Bright Boy," and Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer's "My Shining Hour." We're the only group performing that night, so we'll have more time to play than usual.
Admission is free and they usually put out juice, fruit and cookies afterwards.
Directions:
Highland Avenue is a shallow right turn off of Rt. 38 in Winchester, at a Hospital sign (a white H on a blue background).
The school is about a quarter of a mile up the hill on Highland Avenue.
You'll see two driveways on the left side of the street that are each flanked by a pair lights. The first driveway is the exit from the school.
Turn into the second driveway and go straight back alongside the building into the parking lot.
The entrance is in the front of the building, in the middle of the curved driveway that connects the entrance and exit driveways.
Nichols Hall is on the ground floor in the right-rear corner of the building, on the same side of the building as the parking lot.
To get to the corner of Rt. 38 and Highland Avenue in Winchester, follow the directions below for where you're coming from.
--------
From North Cambridge:
Take Massachusetts Avenue north to Fresh Pond Parkway to the rotary where it meets Mystic Valley Parkway.
Go left at the rotary onto Mystic Valley Parkway, and follow it to the second bridge, which is Rt. 60. Turn Right onto Rt. 60, and take that
bridge over the Mystic River. At that point Rt. 60 becomes known as High street. Follow the directions that start with "Follow High Street" in the next section.
---------
From Rt. 128:
Take Rt. 128 to Route 2 East
Take Route 2 East to Route 60 North (Pleasant Street - but be careful, because there's another Pleasant Street exit in another town first!).
Follow Pleasant St./Route 60 North across Mass Ave in Arlington Center.
Bear right after the municipal parking lot behind Mass Ave to stay on Route 60. It'll be called Chestnut Street, then Medford Street, and
after it hops over the Mystic River (really more of a stream at that point) Route 60 is called High Street.
Follow High Street for just over a half a mile and you'll come to a Railroad Crossing at a Dunkin Donuts. (There's a train station there, which may not be
visible from that side.) Immediately after you cross the tracks, make a hairpin left onto Playstead Road.
After 0.85 miles, Playstead will end at Winchester Street - take Winchester Street/Rt. 38 to the left for just under half a mile to
where you see the blue hospital sign on the right, at the corner of Highland Avenue. Take the right onto Highland Avenue and follow the
directions directly under the school's address.
--------
From Boston:
Take Route 93 North to Exit 31: Route 16 / Mystic Valley Parkway.
After you leave Rt. 93, ignore the exit ramps on the right - the ramp will descend back down to street level and merge into Mystic
Valley Parkway.
Once you're on Mystic Valley Parkway, take a Right at the second light (the first is a driveway) onto Route 38, Winthrop Street.
That goes uphill for a block and hits a rotary which you'll use to make a Left turn to stay on Route 38, now called Winchester Street (you don't
want Rt. 60).
Follow Winchester Street/Rt. 38 for another mile and a half after the rotary to where you see the blue hospital sign on the right at the
corner of Highland Avenue. Take the right onto Highland Avenue and follow the directions directly under the school's address.
---------
From Greenfield Avenue, Somerville:
Left (NW) on Boston St,
Right (NE) on Walnut Street,
Left (NW) on Medford Street for 1.3 miles until you enter Medford and it becomes Main Street
Continue on Main Street for 0.9 miles, which becomes Rt. 38.
Pass under Mystic Valley Parkway and turn left to merge into it.
Follow the directions above, starting with "Once you're on Mystic Valley Parkway"
--------
From Cambridgeport:
Take Memorial Drive east to the end. Take the right-hand lanes that follow the water, and go past the Cambridgeside Galleria. You'll come to
a light where you're looking at the massive concrete trolley bridge in front of you.
That's the corner of Rt. 28. Turn left and follow it to Rt. 38, Mystic Avenue. (At the next light, take the right fork when you pass under the
trolley tracks, to stay on Rt. 28.)
Keep following the signs for Rt. 28 until after you've taken the right turn over the bridge onto Washington Street towards the old Somerville
Lumber location. (Now a supermarket.)
When you get there, you'll have a three-way choice between going into the underpass on the left towards Assembly Square Mall, turning right to
get onto Rt. 93 South, and going straight (which then curves left over the underpass).
Take the left-hand most lane that doesn't go into the underpass. You'll go straight and then curve left over the underpass onto Rt. 38 (Mystic
Avenue) North.
You'll pass one of the inimitable Cambridge-style murals on your right - this one's two blocks long.
After the mural, take a Right up onto the ramp to Route 93 North - unless there's a real back-up for that ramp or it's rush hour and you
can see that Rt. 93 North is backed up. (If so skip the next two paragraphs.)
Once you're on Rt. 93N, stay in the right-hand lane, because you'll get right back off again in about a quarter of a mile onto Rt. 16/Mystic
Valley Parkway.
After you do that, ignore the exit ramps on the right - you'll descend back down to street level and merge into Mystic Valley Parkway.
If the ramp up onto Rt. 93 is backed up, just stay on Rt. 38. After several blocks, you'll pass under the route just discussed, and take a
left turn to stay on Rt. 38 and merge into Mystic Valley Parkway.
Regardless which way you got that merge, you'll turn Right at the second light (the first light is at a driveway) and continue following signs
for Rt. 38. This Right will be onto Winthrop Street.
Winthrop Street goes uphill for a block and hits a rotary which you'll use to make a Left turn to stay on Rt. 38, now called Winchester Street
(you don't want Rt. 60).
Follow Winchester Street/Rt. 38 for another mile and a half after the rotary to where you see the blue hospital sign on the right, at the
corner of Highland Avenue. Take the right onto Highland Avenue and follow the directions directly under the school's address.
